Surah 15. Al-Hijr

Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the Verses of the book and a plain Qur’an

Perhaps (the Day will come when) those who disbelieve wish that they were Muslims

Leave them (alone) to eat, let them enjoy, and be preoccupied (with false) hope. They will come to know (the truth)

And Allah did not destroy a town but there was a known decree for it

No nation can advance its term (fate), nor delay it

And they say: “O you (Muhammad) to whom the reminder (the Qur’an) has been sent down! Surely, you are insane

Why don’t you bring angels to us if you are of the truthful ones?”

We don’t send down the angels except with the truth (for punishment), and when they come, they (the disbelievers) are not given respite

Truly, We have sent down the reminder (the Qur’an), and surely, We will guard it

Indeed, We sent (Messengers) before you (O Muhammad) amongst the early communities

and any Messenger came to them, they mocked at him

Thus We let it (disbelief) enter into the hearts of the sinners

so they don’t believe in it (the Qur’an), though the examples of (Allah’s punishment of) the ancients have passed

And even if We had opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continue to ascend through it

surely they would have said: “Our eyes have been blocked (blurred). But nay, we have been bewitched.”

And indeed, We have put big stars in the heaven and beautified it for the beholders

and We have protected them from every outcast devil

Except him (devil) who steals a hearing, he is pursued by a clear flaming fire

And We have spread the earth and placed firm mountains in it; and caused to grow therein every thing balanced (in due proportion)

and Allah has made provision for you therein means of living, and for those whom you don’t provide

And there is not a thing but its (inexhaustible) treasures are with Us. And We have not sent it down except in a known measure

And We send the fertilizing winds (fill clouds with water), then causes the water (rain) to descend from the sky, gives it to you to drink, and it is not you who is able to store

And certainly We! It is We Who give life, cause death, and We are the Inheritors

And indeed, We know the first generations of you who have passed away, and indeed, We know the present generations who will come afterwards

And surely, your Lord will gather them. Truly, He is the All-Wise, the All-Knower

And indeed, We created human from clay of mud altered into shape

And the jinn, We created it before from fire of smokeless flame

And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: “Surely, I am going to create a human (Adam) from clay mud altered into shape

when I have fashioned him and breathed into him the soul (which Allah created for him), then you fall down prostrating before him.”

So, the angels prostrated all of them together

except Satan, he refused to be with those who prostrated

(Allah) said: “O Satan! What is your reason that you are not with those who prostrated?”

(Satan) said: “I am not the one to prostrate to a human whom You have created from clay of mud molded into shape.”

(Allah) said: “Then, get out from here, for surely you are accursed

Surely, the curse will be upon you till the Day of recompense.”

(Satan) said: “O my Lord! Give me respite till the Day of Resurrection.”

Allah said: “Then surely, you are given the respite

till the Day of appointed time.”

(Satan) said: “O my Lord! Since You let me go astray, I shall indeed adorn (path of error) for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all

except those who are Your sincere devotees.”

(Allah) said: “This is the way straight to Me

Certainly, you will have no authority over My devotees, except those who follow you of the ones who go astray

And surely, hell is the promised place for them all

it (hell) has 7 gates; each gate will be assigned to a separate class (for sinners) from them

Truly! The pious people will be in the midst of the gardens and water-springs (of Paradise)

(It will be said to them): “Enter therein (Paradise) in peace and security.”

And We shall remove all hatred from their hearts, so they will be like brothers and sit on couches face to face

No fatigue will touch them in it, nor shall they be removed from it

Inform (O Muhammad) to My devotees that truly, I am the Forgiving, the Merciful

but My Punishment is also the most painful punishment

And tell them about the guests (the angels) of Abraham

They entered upon him and said: “Peace!” Abraham replied: “Indeed! We are afraid of you.”

They (the angels) said: “Don’t be afraid! We truly bring to you glad tidings of a son (possessing) knowledge.”

Abraham said: “Do you give me glad tidings (of a son) when old age has overtaken me? What kind of glad tidings you are giving?”

They (the angels) said: “We give you glad tidings in truth. So don’t be those who despair.”

(Abraham) said: “Who despairs of the Mercy of his Lord except those who are astray?”

(Abraham again) said: “Then what is your mission, O Messengers?”

They (the angels) said: “We have been sent (to punish) the people who are criminals

except the family of Lot. We truly will save them all (from destruction)

except his wife, Allah has decreed that she shall be of those who will stay behind (to be destroyed).”

When the Messengers (the angels) came to the family of Lot

he said: “Surely! You are people unknown to me.”

They said: “Nay, we have come to you with that (punishment) concerning which they have doubts

We have brought you the truth (news of destruction of your nation) and we are telling the truth

Then travel with your family during the last part of the night, and you follow from their rear; no one of you look back, but go on where you are ordered to go.”

And We have made this decree known to him that the roots of those (sinners) will be cut off in the early morning

And the people of the city came (to Lot’s house) rejoicing (at the news of the 2 young male visitors)

(Lot) said: “Surely! These are my guests, so don’t disgrace me

And fear Allah and don’t disgrace me.”

They (people of the city) said: “Did we not forbid you from (entertaining) any of the people?”

(Lot) said: “These (the girls of the nation) are my daughters (to marry lawfully), if you must act.”

Truly, by your life (O Muhammad), they were wandering blindly in their wild intoxication

So the awful blast overtook them at the time of sunrise

And We turned it (towns of Sodom in Palestine) upside down and rained to them stones of baked clay

Surely! In this are signs for those who see

And surely, they (the cities) are on an established road (from Makkah to Syria i.e. the place where the Dead Sea is now)

Surely! Therein is indeed a sign for the believers

And surely, the people in the wood (the people of Midian to whom Prophet Shuaib was sent by Allah) were also wrongdoers

So, We took vengeance on them. They are both (ruined) on a clear road

And surely, the people of Hijr (the rocky tract) denied the Messengers

And We gave them Our Verses, but they were averse to them

And they used to cut out secure homes in the mountains

But the awful blast overtook them in the early morning

and all their earnings (building homes by craving the rock) did not avail

And We have not created the heavens, the earth, and all that is between them except with truth. Surely, the Hour (of Doom) is coming, so overlook (O Muhammad) their faults with gracious forgiveness

Surely, your Lord is the All-Knowing Creator

And indeed, We have given you 7 of the repeatedly recited Verses (Al-Fatihah) and the Glorious Qur’an

Don’t look with your eyes at what We have bestowed on certain classes of them (disbelievers), nor grieve over them. And lower your wings (be courteous) to the believers

And say (O Muhammad): “I am indeed the plain Warner.”

As We have sent down (this warning) on the dividers

who have made the Qur’an into parts (believe some parts and deny others)

So, by your Lord (O Muhammad), We shall certainly ask them all

about what they used to do

Therefore proclaim that which you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists

Truly! We will suffice you against the scoffers (mockers)

who set up another deity along with Allah, so they will come to know

Indeed, We know that your heart is distressed by what they say

So, glorify the praises of your Lord, be of those who prostrate (to Him)

and worship your Lord until the certainty (death) comes to you
