70. Al-Ma'aarij

A questioner asked concerning a punishment about to befall

«سأل سائل» دعا داع «بعذاب واقع»

Verse 1

upon the disbelievers, none can avert

(للكافرين ليس له دافع) هو النضر بن الحارث قال: "" اللهم إن كان هذا هو الحق "" الآية

Verse 2

(It will come) from Allah, the Lord of the Ways of Ascent

«من الله» متصل بواقع «ذي المعارج» مصاعد الملائكة وهي السماوات

Verse 3

The angels and the spirit (Gabriel) ascend to Him in a Day the measure of which is 50,000 years

«تعرج» بالتاء والياء «الملائكة والروح» جبريل «إليه» إلى مهبط أمره من السماء «في يوم» متعلق بمحذوف، أي يقع العذاب بهم في يوم القيامة «كان مقداره خمسين ألف سنة» بالنسبة إلى الكافر لما يلقى فيه من الشدائد، وأما المؤمن فيكون أخف عليه من صلاة مكتوبة يصليها في الدنيا كما جاء في الحديث

Verse 4

So be patient (O Muhammad) with a good patience

«فاصبر» وهذا قبل أن يؤمر بالقتال «صبرا جميلا» أي لا جزع فيه

Verse 5

Surely! They see it (Day of judgment) to be far off

«إنهم يرونه» أي العذاب «بعيدا» غير واقع

Verse 6

but We see it quite near

«ونراه قريبا» واقعا لا محالة

Verse 7

On that Day, the sky will be like molten lead

«يوم تكون السماء» متعلق بمحذوف تقديره يقع «كالمهل» كذائب الفضة

Verse 8

and the mountains will be like flakes of wool

«وتكون الجبال كالعهن» كالصوف في الخفة والطيران بالريح

Verse 9

and no friend will ask of a friend

«ولا يسأل حميم حميما» قريب قريبه لاشتغال كل بحاله

Verse 10

though they will be made to see one another (no one can help including relatives). The criminal would wish to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children

«يبصرونهم» أي يبصر الأحماء بعضهم بعضا ويتعارفون ولا يتكلمون والجملة مستأنفة «يود المجرم» يتمنى الكافر «لو» بمعنى أن «يفتدي من عذاب يومئذ» بكسر الميم وفتحها «ببنيه»

Verse 11

his wife and his brother

«وصاحبته» زوجته «وأخيه»

Verse 12

his kindred who gave him shelter

«وفصيلته» عشيرته لفصله منها «التي تؤويه» تضمه

Verse 13

and all that is in the earth, so that it might save him

«ومن في الأرض جميعا ثم ينجيه» ذلك الافتداء عطف على يفتدي

Verse 14

But no means! Surely, it will be the fire of hell

«كلا» رد لما يوده «إنها» أي النار «لظى» اسم لجهنم لأنها تتلظى، أي تتلهب على الكفار

Verse 15

to take away (burn completely) the head skin

«نزاعة للشوى» جمع شواة وهي جلدة الرأس

Verse 16

he will call all those who turn their backs and turn away their faces

«تدعو من أدبر وتولى» عن الإيمان بأن تقول: إليَّ إليَّ

Verse 17

who collected (wealth) and hide it (from spending in the cause of Allah)

«وجمع» المال «فأوعي» أمسكه في وعائه ولم يؤد حق الله منه

Verse 18

Surely, human has been created very impatient

«إن الإنسان خلق هلوعا» حال مقدرة وتفسيره

Verse 19

when the evil touches them, they are distressed

«إذا مسه الشر جزوعا» وقت مس الشر

Verse 20

but when good (fortune) touches them, they are stingy

«وإذا مسه الخير منوعا» وقت مس الخير أي المال لحق الله منه

Verse 21

except those who devote to prayers

«إلا المصلين» أي المؤمنين

Verse 22

those who remain steadfast in their prayers

«الذين هم على صلاتهم دائمون» مواظبون

Verse 23

those who set aside a known right in their wealth

«والذين في أموالهم حق معلوم» هو الزكاة

Verse 24

for the beggar who asks and for the deprived (who lost property and wealth)

«للسائل والمحروم» المتعفف عن السؤال فيحرم

Verse 25

those who believe in the Day of recompense

«والذين يُصدقون بيوم الدين» الجزاء

Verse 26

those who fear the punishment of their Lord

«والذين هم من عذاب ربهم مشفقون» خائفون

Verse 27

surely! The punishment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure

«إن عذاب ربهم غير مأمون» نزوله

Verse 28

those who guard their chastity (private parts from illegal sex)

«والذين هم لفروجهم حافظون»

Verse 29

except with their wives or those whom their right hands possess so they are not to be blamed

«إلا على أزواجهم أو ما ملكت أيمانهم» من الإماء «فإنهم غير ملومين»

Verse 30

But those who seek to go beyond this, then it is those who are transgressors

«فمن ابتغى وراء ذلك فأولئك هم العادون» المتجاوزون الحلال إلى الحرام

Verse 31

And those who keep their trusts and their covenants

«والذين هم لأماناتهم» وفي قراءة بالإفراد: ما ائْتُمِنوا عليه من أمر الدين والدنيا «وعهدهم» المأخوذ عليهم في ذلك «راعون» حافظون

Verse 32

and those who stand firm in their testimonies

«والذين هم بشهادتهم» وفي قراءة بالجمع «قائمون» يقيمونها ولا يكتمونها

Verse 33

and those who guard their prayers well

«والذين هم على صلاتهم يحافظون» بأدائها في أوقاتها

Verse 34

it is they who will be in the gardens (Paradise) with honor

«أولئك في جنات مكرمون»

Verse 35

So what is the matter with the disbelievers that they hasten to listen from you (O Muhammad)

«فمال الذين كفروا قبلك» نحوك «مهطعين» حال، أي مديمي النظر

Verse 36

sitting in groups on the right and on the left (of you, O Muhammad)

«عن اليمين وعن الشمال» منك «عزين» حال أيضا، أي جماعات حلقا حلقا، يقولون استهزاء بالمؤمنين: لئن دخل هؤلاء الجنة لندخلنها قبلهم قال تعالى

Verse 37

Does every one of them seek to enter the Paradise of delight

«أيطمع كل امرىءٍ منهم أن يدخل جنة نعيم»

Verse 38

But nay! Surely, We have created them out of that which they (disbelievers) know

«كلا» ردع لهم عن طمعهم في الجنة «إنا خلقناهم» كغيرهم «مما يعلمون» من نطف فلا يطمع بذلك في الجنة وإنما يطمع فيها بالتقوى

Verse 39

So, I (Muhammad) swear by the Lord of all points of sunrise in the east and sunset in the west that surely We are Able (to destroy them)

«فلا» لا زائدة «أقسم برب المشارق والمغارب» للشمس والقمر وسائر الكواكب «إنا لقادرون»

Verse 40

and can replace them by others better than them; and We are not to be outrun

«على أن نبدل» نأتي بدلهم «خيرا منهم وما نحن بمسبوقين» بعاجزين عن ذلك

Verse 41

So, leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they meet their Day which they are promised

«فذرهم» اتركهم «يخوضوا» في باطلهم «ويلعبوا» في دنياهم «حتى يلاقوا» يلقوا «يومهم الذي يوعدون» فيه العذاب

Verse 42

The Day when they will come out of the graves quickly as if they are racing towards a goal

«يوم يخرجون من الأجداث» القبور «سراعا» إلى المحشر «كأنهم إلى نَصْبِ» وفي قراءة بضم الحرفين، شيء منصوب كعلم أو راية «يوفضون» يسرعون

Verse 43

with their eyes lowered in fear and humility, covering them with disgrace! That is the Day which they are promised

«خاشعة» ذليلة «أبصارهم ترهقهم» تغشاهم «ذلة ذلك اليوم الذي كانوا يوعدون» ذلك مبتدأ وما بعده الخبر ومعناه يوم القيامة

Verse 44
