91. Ash-Shams

By the sun and its brightness

«والشمس وضحاها» ضوؤها

Verse 1

by the moon as it follows it (sun)

«والقمر إذا تلاها» تبعها طالعا عند غروبها

Verse 2

by the day as it shows up (the sun’s) brightness

«والنهار إذا جلاها» بارتفاعه

Verse 3

by the night as it conceals it (the sun)

«والليل إذا يغشاها» يغطيها بظلمته وإذا في الثلاثة لمجرد الظرفية والعامل فيها فعل القسم

Verse 4

by the heaven and Him who built it

«والسماء وما بناها»

Verse 5

by the earth and Him who spread it

«والأرض وما طحاها» بسطها

Verse 6

by the soul and Him who perfected it in proportion

«ونفس» بمعنى نفوس «وما سوَّاها» في الخلقة وما في الثلاثة مصدرية أو بمعنى من

Verse 7

and He inspired him with (knowledge of) what is wrong for him and what is right for him

«فألهمها فجورها وتقواها» بيَّن لها طريق الخير والشر وأخر التقوى رعاية لرؤوس الآي وجواب القسم

Verse 8

Indeed one will succeed who purifies his own self (obey Allah)

«قد أفلح» حذفت منه اللام لطول الكلام «مَنْ زكَّاها» طهرها من الذنوب

Verse 9

and indeed one will fail who corrupts him (disobey Allah)

«وقد خاب» خسر «مَنْ دسَّاها» أخفاها بالمعصية وأصله دسها أبدلت السين الثانية ألفا تخفيفا

Verse 10

Thamud (people) denied (their prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting the truth)

«كذَّبت ثمود» رسولها صالحا «بطغواها» بسبب طغيانها

Verse 11

when the most wicked person among them went out (to kill the she-camel)

«إذ انبعث» أسرع «أشقاها» واسمه قدار إلى عقر الناقة برضاهم

Verse 12

The Messenger of Allah (Saleh) said to them: “That is the she-camel of Allah! (Don’t harm it and don’t stop it from) its drink.”

«فقال لهم رسول الله» صالح «ناقة الله» أي ذروها «وسقياها» شربها في يومها وكان لها يوم ولهم يوم

Verse 13

They denied him and killed her. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (leveled to ground)

«فكذبوه» في قوله ذلك عن الله المرتب عليه نزول العذاب بهم إن خالفوه «فعقروها» قتلوها ليسلم لهم ماء شربها «فدمدم» أطبق «عليهم ربهم» العذاب «بذنبهم فسواها» أي الدمدمة عليهم، أي عمهم بها فلم يفلت منهم أحد

Verse 14

And He has no fear of its consequences

«ولا» بالواو والفاء «يخاف عقباها» تبعتها
